Storm Warning in Roseburg: Chemeketa Sweeps Umpqua Behind Dominant Pitching and Timely Hits
Spark Plug Caraphina Scores 4 Runs in the Doubleheader
ROSEBURG, Ore. — The Chemeketa Storm made a loud statement in NWAC South Region play this past Saturday, traveling to Roseburg and walking away with a gritty doubleheader sweep of the Umpqua Riverhawks. With final scores of 8-1 and 5-3, the Storm combined a relentless offensive approach with two stellar complete-game performances in the circle to solidify their standing in the conference.
Game 1: Bennett Decisively Shuts Down the Riverhawks
Final: Chemeketa 8, Umpqua 1
The opener was a masterclass in efficiency by Storm starter Addison Bennett. Throwing all seven innings, Bennett surrendered just four hits and one earned run, keeping the Riverhawks off-balance with a 67% strike rate.
Offensively, the Storm wasted no time. In the first inning, Meagan Trissell and Laney Deloe delivered back-to-back RBI singles to jump out to a 2-0 lead. While Umpqua scratched across a run in the bottom of the first, it was all Chemeketa from there. Trissell remained a thorn in the Riverhawks' side, lacing a two-run single in the third to extend the lead.
The Storm blew the game open late, capitalizing on six Umpqua errors. Zoe Moore capped a three-RBI performance with a two-run single in the sixth, scoring Kylie Caraphina and Grace Walls. By the time Jazmin Gallegos notched a sacrifice fly in the seventh, the Storm had cruised to a dominant seven-run victory.
Game 2: The Comeback Kids Strike Again
Final: Chemeketa 5, Umpqua 3
The nightcap required a bit more "Storm Grit." Chemeketa found themselves in an early hole as Umpqua used a passed ball and a two-run triple by Bella Garza to build a 3-0 lead through three innings.
The momentum shifted in the fourth when the middle of the order went to work. Meagan Trissell continued her career day, smoking a two-run double to center field to bring the Storm within one. With Laney Deloe dealing on the rubber, the Storm defense locked in, providing five scoreless frames to close out the game.
The definitive blow came in the sixth inning. After Ava Woods scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 3-3, Deloe helped her own cause by lining a go-ahead RBI single to center, scoring Layni Noonkester. The Storm added an insurance run and Deloe slammed the door in the seventh, finishing a complete-game win with four strikeouts.
Stars of the Saturday Sweep
-
Meagan Trissell: The undisputed MVP of the doubleheader, Trissell finished the day with 6 RBIs, including the game-changing double in the nightcap.
-
Addison Bennett & Laney Deloe: The duo combined for 13.2 innings of work, allowing only four earned runs and proving that Chemeketa has the arms to compete in any series.
-
Kylie Caraphina: The spark plug at the top of the order, Caraphina went 3-for-8 on the day and scored four critical runs.
-
Layni Noonkester: The shortstop was a constant threat, recording four hits and scoring three times across the two games.
Conclusion
Winning on the road in the NWAC South is never easy, but Chemeketa made it look like a business trip. By out-hitting the Riverhawks 20-11 over 14 innings, the Storm showed they can produce runs both through power and by putting pressure on the opposing defense. With the pitching staff finding its groove and the middle of the order driving in runs at an elite clip, the Storm returns home with massive momentum.
