Bounce-Back Performance: Storm Salvage Split with Thrilling Game 2 Win
Mound Mastery: Hockman and Eaton Anchor Saturday Doubleheader
SALEM, Ore. — Saturday's doubleheader at Storm Field was a study in perseverance. After a tough-luck shutout in the opener, the Chemeketa Storm bounced back in the nightcap, showing grit and clutch offensive execution to secure a 5-4 victory and earn a crucial split against the Mt. Hood Saints.
Game 1: A Pitcher's Duel Goes to the Saints
Final: Mt. Hood 2, Chemeketa 0
The first game of the day was a classic defensive standoff. Chemeketa starter Ryne Hockman delivered a stellar performance, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing only one unearned run on four hits. Despite Hockman's command and the solid relief work of Andrew Yost, the Storm bats struggled to find momentum against Mt. Hood's Anthony Leo.
The game remained a 1-0 thriller until the seventh inning, when the Saints managed to manufacture a second run on an RBI single by Jordan Araiza. Despite putting runners on base, Chemeketa couldn't break through, leaving nine runners stranded in the scoreless effort.
Game 2: The Storm Strikes Back
Final: Chemeketa 5, Mt. Hood 4
The nightcap proved that the Storm had short memories. Chemeketa came out swinging in the first inning, as Kyle Sheller drove a clutch double to score Liam Irish, followed by a productive sacrifice groundout from Slater Tsuma to take an early 2-0 lead.
Mt. Hood fought back to tie the game at 2-2 in the third, setting the stage for a dramatic middle-inning push by the Storm:
-
The 4th Inning: Joe Vaccaro lined an RBI single to put the Storm back on top 3-2.
-
The 5th Inning: Chemeketa manufactured two more runs. A defensive error by the Saints allowed Brodan Curtiss to plate a run, and Chase Saunders drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 5-2.
Starter Max Eaton was masterful, holding the Saints to two runs on six hits over 6.0 innings of work. Although Mt. Hood rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh, Liam Petty stepped into the high-leverage spot and slammed the door, striking out two to earn the save and seal the victory.
