A New Era for Storm Baseball: Chemeketa Debuts State-of-the-Art Stadium
The House That Grit Built: Slater Tsuma Lights Up Brand New Stadium Debut
SALEM, Ore. — For years, the dream of a premier baseball facility at Chemeketa Community College was just that—a dream. This past week, that dream became a vivid, high-definition reality as the Storm officially opened their brand-new baseball stadium, a facility that instantly rivals any in the Pacific Northwest.
The atmosphere was electric as fans filled the 500 additional stadium seats, providing a panoramic view of a transformation that goes far beyond aesthetics. The centerpiece of the project is a full-turf field by FieldTurf, offering a consistent, professional-grade playing surface that allows the Storm to compete regardless of the unpredictable Oregon weather. Rising above the diamond are cutting-edge LED lights, designed to eliminate shadows and bring a "Friday Night Lights" intensity to evening matchups.
However, the most significant upgrade might be the one the fans can't see from the stands. The stadium is now equipped with the Trackman system, the same radar technology used by all 30 Major League Baseball teams. Trackman tracks everything the ball does—measuring exit velocity, launch angles, pitch spin rates, and defensive range—giving the Storm coaching staff a data-driven edge in player development and scouting.
The Slater Tsuma Narrative: Writing the First Chapter
While the technology and turf represent the future of the program, the opening day performance of Slater Tsuma served as a reminder of the heart and history behind the Storm.
A 2023 graduate of Westview High School, Tsuma is a veteran third-year presence who has become the "Quiet Leader" of the clubhouse. A former 2nd-Team All-League infielder as a freshman, Slater took on a new challenge this season by transitioning from the infield to the outfield—a move he handled with the same discipline and humility that have defined his career.
It was only fitting, then, that Tsuma's name would be the one etched into every "first" in the new stadium's history books. On opening day, Slater recorded:
-
The First Hit in the new stadium.
-
The First Run Scored on the new turf.
-
The First Home Run to clear the new outfield wall.
"Slater lives out our values every single day," the coaching staff noted. "He is the prime example of how hard work and a team-first mentality lead to elite outcomes. To see him record those 'firsts' wasn't a surprise to anyone who sees how he prepares."
The opening of this stadium is more than just a renovation; it is a commitment to the student-athletes who represent Chemeketa. After the final out, one thing was clear: the Storm is home.
