Storm Silenced: Chemeketa Struggles to Find Rhythm in Coos Bay
Missed Opportunities and Big Innings: A Recap of the Storm’s Trip to the Coast
COOS BAY, Ore. – It was a difficult Friday on the coast for the Chemeketa Storm, as they struggled to find their offensive rhythm and contain a potent Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) lineup, dropping both ends of a baseball doubleheader.
While the opener was a classic pitcher's duel that slipped away late, the nightcap saw the Lakers' bats explode in an offensive barrage that the Storm simply couldn't match.
Game 1: Lakers 3, Storm 0
A Masterclass in Frustration
The first game of the day was defined by "what ifs" for Chemeketa. Storm starter Jack Klee turned in a gritty performance, pitching deep into the seventh inning and keeping his team within striking distance. However, he was outmatched by the Lakers' duo of Beau Benedictson and Shinnosuke Sanada, who combined for a four-hit shutout.
Southwestern Oregon struck early with an RBI single in the first, but Klee settled in, weaving through traffic to keep the score 1–0 for the next five innings. The Storm had their chances—putting runners on via four walks and four hits—but they left 11 runners stranded on base.
The game finally tilted in the bottom of the seventh when the Lakers capitalized on a walk and a hit batter to plate two insurance runs. Chemeketa's Slater Tsuma, Wyatt Hooper, Robert Campbell, and Joe Vaccaro each recorded hits, but the timely knock needed to break the seal never arrived.
Game 2: Lakers 14, Storm 2
The Floodgates Open
Hoping to split the series, the Storm came out swinging in the second game. After falling behind 2–0 in the first, Chemeketa showed signs of life in the middle innings.
In the second, Joe Vaccaro drew a bases-loaded walk to score Wyatt Hooper. In the third, Isaiah Sanchez—who was a bright spot for the Storm going 2-for-3—laced an RBI single to score Kyle Sheller, knotting the game at 2–2.
However, the momentum was short-lived. The Lakers reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third and then unleashed a nightmare fifth inning on the Storm bullpen. Southwestern Oregon sent a parade of hitters to the plate, racking up eight runs on seven hits and four walks in that frame alone.
By the time the dust settled, the Lakers had amassed 20 hits. Despite the defensive efforts of Liam Irish and the middle infield, who turned a sharp double play in the third, the volume of base runners became insurmountable.
Key Storm Performers (Doubleheader Totals):
-
Isaiah Sanchez: 2-for-3, RBI (Game 2)
-
Wyatt Hooper: 2 hits, 1 run scored
-
Joe Vaccaro: 1 hit, 1 RBI, 2 Walks
-
Jack Klee: 6.1 IP, 3 ER, 3 SO (Game 1)
Looking Ahead
The Storm will look to shake off the coastal chill and regroup as they return to conference play. The focus will undoubtedly be on stranded runners and pitching depth as they prepare for their next series.
